Our Program

Ski Apache Adaptive Sports (SAAS) is one of the oldest adaptive ski programs in the country. We offer learn-to-ski programs for students of all ages with a variety of disabilities in Alpine, and Snowboarding disciplines.  A family-oriented program, SAAS includes Spanish speaking instructors and group programs for schools and rehabilitation centers.

Our program is a not-for-profit organization registered as a charitable 501(c)3 organization in the state of New Mexico.

We are a community funded organization and are grateful for their support.

It's all about the Skier!

We are dedicated to developing the abilities of each student.

We have designed our winter program to provide the fun and freedom of snow sports through the use of adaptive equipment, safety, and specially-trained coaches.

We turn no willing student down due to severity of impairment or financial constraints!

If you qualify but ski independently, come by for a half price voucher. If you have a helper, he/she can also ski for half price (courtesy of Ski Apache).

One-on-One Instruction

Our students receive one-on-one instruction with one or two of our qualified staff. We have 35 coaches and volunteers all trained and many certified by the Professional Ski Instructors Association - Adaptive Program.

We stress safety and make ongoing dynamic assessments and adjustments during the skiers’ day to accommodate for their learning and enjoyment.  Lessons are tailored to the individual and reservations are recommended and may be made by calling the SAAS office.

The Right Equipment

Skiing can be for everyone; sometimes all it takes is a little adaptive equipment and an organization that has what it takes to give people access!

  • Skiing with attached tip brace assists stability and stance
  • Tethers attached to the tip brace aid in speed control and assist in forming turn shape
  • Riding a sit-ski and using outriggers to control speed gives mountain access to a person using a wheelchair
  • A ski walker can be used for extra balance and support while standing
  • A well trained, creative and compassionate coach is the best equipment of all!

Skis, boots, poles and snowboards are available at the rental shops in Ruidoso or the Ski Apache Rental Shop. Complimentary equipment can be picked up with a prior reservation, at Rocky Mountain Sports (575-258-3224) or Wild West Ski Shop (575-258-3131) any day except the busiest days during Christmas and Spring Breaks. Ski Apache Rental shop provides equipment for our weekly group programs.
